Benchmark

We offer a one-off review of cultural competency within your organisation. However, building upon that, as part of your continuous improvement programme, we can offer an annual review of cultural competency & health disparities within your organisation. Each year’s review makes recommendations and reports on improvements or declines from the previous year.

Mauri Ora is a unique consultancy that combines the extensive experience, background and qualifications of its key Associates and networks.

Mauri Ora Associates was established in 2000 to provide management consultancy and education services to a broad range of organisations in the public and private sectors. Its principal aim is to improve the delivery of culturally appropriate services to Māori.

A secondary aim is to elevate indigenous development by expanding into other sectors.

Mauri Ora Associates activities, experience, credentials

Mauri Ora Associates Ltd (MOA) was established in 2000 and is a clinical consultancy based in Auckland. Our major areas of business activity are: training, research, and evaluation. These services are provided nation-wide to Māori providers, Non-Government Organisations, private companies, and the major government agencies.

MOA is a registered CME provider and brings a strong background of clinical, training, business development and cultural competency as reflected in the range of work it has completed, and is currently undertaking. This work includes:

  • Māori clinical leadership and directorship of the first Primary Health Organisation (PHO) in the country;
  • The cultural audit of 34 DHBs, tertiary institutes, and professional colleges that provide post entry clinical training;
  • The delivery of the Graduate Certificate of Clinical Teaching (Māori) in collaboration with the Christchurch College of Education – training over 50 Māori doctors, nurses and health workers in clinical leadership positions;
  • The delivery of the Certificate in Hauora Māori in collaboration with Te Ataarangi Trust – training over 400 Māori health clinicians and workers in Māori language and tikanga competencies;
  • The delivery of training programmes such as:
    • Leadership in Māori Public Health (4 cohorts);
    • Leadership Programme for Māori working in Disabilities (2 cohorts);
    • Leadership Programme for Māori Nurses (2 cohorts);
    • Cultural competencies for PHO primary care teams;
    • Māori Primary Care Hui;
    • Treaty of Waitangi & Tikanga Best Practice Training with Auckland DHB;
  • Research into He Ritenga Whakaaro: Māori experiences of health services for a joint venture including the Ministry of Health, Health Research Council and ACC;
  • Research into improving access for the Cancer Society New Zealand;
  • Psychiatric Support Services to ACC including the development of the credentialing process for Psychiatrists and standardising reporting templates;
  • Feasibility study of a shared Management Service Organisation for the Māori-led PHOs;
  • Suicide Prevention Policy review for New Zealand Police;
  • Youth Mental Health Services Implementation Plan for the Waikato District Health Board.
  • PHO strategic and business planning;
  • PHO Population Health Services modelling project;
  • Peview of Māori oral health services in New Zealand;
  • The provision of Branch Medical Advice to ACC branches in the North Island;
  • ACC cultural competency handbook and training resources;
  • MoH Māori screening competencies and training resources;
  • MoH Māori provider quality plan and guidelines;
  • MoH Māori Provider capacity and capability plan;
  • Development of a monitoring framework for Whānau Poutirirangiora-a-Papa;
  • Needs analysis project with Te Manu Toroa; and
  • A national Best Practice Framework for Māori with Disabilities.
  • Development of cultural competence frameworks and / or resources for the New Zealand Medical Council, the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, and the Australasian Faculty of Public Health medicine.
