Healthcare and the Treaty of Waitangi

The Treaty of Waitangi established a Crown obligation to ensure that Māori retained the full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their Lands and Estates, Forests, Fisheries and other properties which were collectively or individually possessed within Aotearoa. The protection of other properties extends to the health and wellbeing of Māori people.
The Māori population have grown from 15 percent in 1996 to 22 percent of the total New Zealand population by 2051. Māori already make up more than a quarter of the total New Zealand school age population. By 2051, 33 percent of all children in the country will be Māori, and Māori in the working age group, fifteen to sixty-four years, will increase by 85 percent. 2009 Approx. 620,000 Māori live in New Zealand, but major health disparities remain. There is also an 8 year gap in life expectancy between [Māori women 73.2 years, men 69 years. Non Māori women 82 years, men 77 years].
The Government has made it a key priority to reduce the health disparities that affect Māori. If Māori are to live longer, have healthier lives, and participate fully in New Zealand society, then the factors that cause disparities in health must be addressed.
